On 7 January, Roku, the pioneer of streaming on TV, announced that it had surpassed 90 million streaming households in the first week of January. That's up from 85.5 million in October. Roku is now in nearly half of all US broadband households.
In a statement, Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood highlighted the company's dedication to creating an easy-to-use and compelling offering for their customers over other competing streaming platforms. This has made Roku the preferred choice for millions of users.
In 2024, Roku celebrated 10 years of branded TV programming and its associated operating system, and 15 years since the introduction of the first connected streaming device, launched in partnership with Netflix. Over the past year, Roku has continued to introduce features that enhance the TV experience. They created Backdrops, which turns any Roku TV into a work of art. Roku Smart Picture automatically optimizes picture quality. Roku Channel, the free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) platform, remains a top 10 streaming service in the US with 80% year-over-year growth in average monthly users. Roku Pay simplifies the process for streamers looking for an easy way to sign up for and manage subscriptions through Roku. The platform enables access to third-party streaming services in the home through promotions.
Roku devices with the Roku Experience are the foundation of Roku's platform business, which includes advertising and subscriptions. For advertisers, Roku says it's a gateway to all of television with advertising experiences like Roku City and the Sports Zone. Roku TVs and streaming players include more than 500 free live linear channels in the US, exclusive premium content and thousands of free on-demand options. Roku's Universal Search, What to Watch and Live TV Guide help users find content across multiple apps, addressing consumer frustration in a crowded entertainment landscape. The company noted the recent launch of the Olympics Zone, which offers genre-based programming from across the platform in one place. The Roku Channel is a top 10 streaming service in the US, competing successfully with free streaming platforms such as Tubi and Pluto.
Wall Street continues to view Roku as a potential takeover target, and possibly even as a buyer, as the industry continues to rationalize. I am very curious to know if and when Roku will be able to surpass the number of users it currently has?
