During the last two years, Netflix has published at least one movie each week. Bloomberg reports that the streaming giant is restructuring its movie division and launching fewer films overall.
Despite the vast amount of movies originally released by the platform, only a few have received accolades - not to mention Red Notice, Don't Look Up, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Netflix strengthened its film development as studios began establishing their own streaming platforms rather than licensing their films to the business. The team working on small projects with a budget of $30 million or less will be combined with the unit producing mid-budget films with a budget of $30 million to $80 million. The streaming giant has also a third department - a big-budget movie development unit, which was responsible for the previously mentioned titles. For now we do not know whether the restructuring would affect that part of the company.
But let’s face it - this was to be expected - why so late? Subscribers tend to watch fewer movies each month compared to their favorite TV series. This suggests that audiences are becoming more picky about what they watch and are looking for higher-quality entertainment that is worth their time and attention.
Secondly, movie production means high expenses associated with actors, sets or SFX. By focusing on a smaller number of movies, Netflix can allocate more resources to a single project, maximizing the probability of creating an outstanding product that attracts viewers.
Finally, the streaming industry has become increasingly competitive with dozens of companies battling for the customer's attention. Netflix can differentiate itself from its rivals by focusing on creating high-quality, original content.
In conclusion, Netflix's decision to develop fewer, higher-quality films is a strategic move designed to meet shifting audience needs, cutting production expenses, and maintaining a competitive advantage in the streaming industry.
