An important step has recently been taken in the streaming world - for the first time, competing streaming video providers have come together to form a united lobbying front, forming a new trade group called the Streaming Innovation Alliance. It brings together Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and other big players to promote their interests to politicians and government bodies.
Here is the list of the lunch members of the Streaming Innovation Alliance (SIA): AfroLandTV, America Nu Network, BET+, Discovery+, For Us By Us Network, Max, the Motion Picture Association, MotorTrend+, Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, PlutoTV, Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision and Vix, Vault and the Walt Disney Co. The reason for forming the SIA is pretty simple: they will 'advocate for federal and state policies that build on the strong, competitive and pro-consumer marketplace for streaming video,’ according to the group's statement.
Not all the major players in the streaming market have joined the group, including Apple, Amazon, YouTube (Google) and Roku. The Streaming Innovation Alliance has two well-known DC leaders on its side: Fred Upton, a Republican who is a 36-year veteran of the US House of Representatives, and Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat who served as acting chair of the Federal Communications Commission.Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association, also played a ’leading role’ in organizing the SIA. In his statement, Rivkin confirmed that the MPA looks forward to working with the SIA and its members, and emphasized the strong support of federal and state policies to encourage the activities of streaming video platforms that offer such a wide range of programming and services to their customers.
Mignon Clyburn emphasized the importance of streaming services, which have ushered in a new era of progress in terms of program diversity, delivering exciting productions to their consumers at record speed and creating many new jobs. Fred Upton also highlighted that the development of new, innovative streaming services should not be constrained by outdated rules and regulations designed for completely different technologies, products and business models.
The SIA has already released key findings from a recent survey which found that 70% of registered voters have a 'favorable' or 'very favorable' view of streaming services. Support is even higher among younger voters and communities of color. In addition, by at least a 2:1 margin, voters are 'concerned that new regulations could require streaming services to collect more data or discourage them from offering sensitive programming,' while two-thirds of those surveyed fear that new regulations will 'most threaten diverse and independent services,' according to the SIA.
Until now, streaming content providers have mostly gone their own way, looking for ways to increase revenues and attract viewers and subscribers independently. Now we are beginning to see joint action and cooperation. The streaming market is a market created by all companies, large and small. It is in the interest of all of them to expand and develop the streaming business, so in some ways they need to work together. In my opinion, it is very good that joint efforts are already being implemented.
