According to Nielsen, the recent 4th of July weekend was the biggest for the streaming TV market in history. During this time, Max platform series 'House of the Dragon' was watched for over one billion minutes for each episode.
The week of July 1-7, 2024 was the biggest week ever for streaming TV since Nielsen began measuring viewership. People streamed more than 313 billion minutes of shows and movies over the long weekend. Each of the top 10 most-watched titles was watched for more than a billion minutes.
Max recently had a problem with 'House of the Dragon' when fragments of the finale of episode 2 were leaked before the premiere. At the end of July, people were able to watch parts of the episode on TikTok, and later on X. 14 films, about 30 minutes of fragments of the final episode were watched by hundreds of thousands of viewers. It took 4 hours to block and ban the account responsible for this leak, but it didn't stop the sharing of stolen content, which was next published on X and Reddit.
This didn't hurt the score too much, as 'House of the Dragon' made it to the top of the list with over 10 billion minutes of content watched:
On this list we can find old and new shows. The 'Suits' series has been getting a lot of views for a while now, as has the children's show 'Bluey'. The Netflix original movie 'Beverly Hills Cop: Alex F.' made it and became undoubtedly no. 1. Amazon's most successful original title is 'The Boys'. Max presents the second season of its 'Game of Thrones' prequel series 'House of the Dragon'. This series is holding its own in the tough streaming market, although it's hard to compete with Netflix because of its huge number of subscribers. This fact has allowed old shows like 'Suits' and 'Dexter' to rocket up the charts once they appeared on the streaming service.
All of this shows that streaming TV is becoming more and more popular. We've just had the biggest week ever for streaming, but we can be sure that this is just another step in its growing popularity. The day of the cord is coming. The streaming market will take its place in the not too distant future, offering much more than cable TV could ever do.
