FAST Channels: The future of the cost-efficient alternative to traditional TV.

During the MIPTV event in Cannes, Omdia revealed the top ten markets for FAST outside the US: UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, France, Spain, and Sweden.

Let me begin with the definition - a FAST channel is a free of charge, preprogrammed, linear video channel with regular ad breaks, delivered in an OTT model through a FAST service, not an AVOD model.

This alternative to traditional cable and satellite TV is very cost-efficient. With more and more customers looking for ways to cut the cord and save money on their entertainment expenses, FAST allows viewers to access a variety of content without paying for a subscription.

Another factor that is driving the growth of FAST is the increasing volume of high-quality content. As more media companies enter the streaming market and license their productions to ad-supported platforms, viewers have access to a wider range of movies, TV shows, and series.

While there are some concerns about the impact of ad-supported content on the consumer experience, many services have found ways to balance the need for advertising revenue streams with the quality of the viewing experience. For example, some platforms limit the amount of advertising that viewers are exposed to or allow viewers to choose which ads they watch.

Overall, it is all about cost-effective ways to deliver high-quality content. Services start to see the benefits of licensing their content to ad-supported platforms. It all depends on the economy - prosperous countries seem to be a natural market while emerging regions seem to still be unprofitable.
