Biggest hit Netflix has ever had.

Biggest hit Netflix has ever had.

Netflix announced that the film "Under Paris" was watched by 40.9 million people on its premiere weekend. The French production has achieved one of the best results in the history of the streaming platform, beating two records and all competitors.

"Under Paris" had the best opening for non-English language films, with a huge lead over other titles. The previous leaders, Norway's "Troll" and Spain's "Nowhere", attracted 24 million viewers during the premiere weekend.

However, the French film had one of the biggest budgets in Netflix's non-English language category. The platform spent USD 25 million on the film. In comparison, "All Quiet in the West" cost 20 million and "Atlas" 100 million, four times more.

The commercial success is undoubtedly huge, but the critics give "Under Paris" a rather average opinion. What's interesting is that 65% of critics gave the film positive feedback, but only 35% of viewers were satisfied after seeing it.

Caryn James said in her BBC Culture article, "The film's simple yet powerful story appealed to viewers who were tired of Marvel and DC's over-complicated shared universes and wanted entertainment, not homework".

Netflix is more focused on making money than making productions that will stay in the Greatest Of All Time category. "Under Paris" is their best seller, and that's what matters most.

The latest Polish production, which achieved a fantastic opening result on the level of Netflix's American productions, must be mentioned here. The film 'Colors of Evil: Red', starring among others Jakub Gierszał, Maja Ostaszewska and Wojciech Zieliński, attracted 19.9 million viewers during its premiere weekend. And within 10 days, the Polish production had been seen by 34.5 million people worldwide!

Netflix's "Znachor", starring Leszek Lichota, was watched by 11.9 million people on the streaming platform during its opening weekend. Within 10 days of its premiere, 22.4 million people had watched it, and after three months, it had reached 43 million viewers.

Netflix, as a leading streaming platform, sets trends in the marketplace more than anyone else. Will we see more productions like this? Is it really possible to beat Hollywood's hegemony? I think the near future will bring some answers to these questions.
