The yet-to-be-named but officially announced ESPN sports streaming service has been entrusted to Pete Distad. The new CEO of the joint venture was previously one of the founders of Apple and Hulu. The ESPN/WBD/FOX sports bundle is expected to launch later this year, according to media reports.
At Hulu, Pete Distat was in charge of marketing the service and was promoted to vice president of marketing and distribution. He then moved to Apple, where he oversaw operations and global distribution for video, sports, Apple Music and Apple TV+.
What does this move mean for sports fans? With the head of the new sports package already working with Apple TV+, viewers will get a wealth of compelling content and LIVE video streaming. At the new company, Distad will oversee the non-entertainment side of the business and be responsible for marketing, sales, distribution and strategy development.
The name, price and other relevant details are yet to be announced. The news alone has already electrified our industry and sports fans. Sports fans are already wringing their hands and speculating about the price tag.
At a recent press conference, Lachlan Murdoch, CEO of Fox, suggested that the service could cost users as much as $50 a month and that it would have 5 million subscribers within five years of launch. The service is expected to include only 14 linear channels, including NBA, NHL, NFL and Major League Baseball broadcasts. Regional sports networks and year-round league games will not be part of the new venture.
